In the past I have written a number of posts regarding the integration of GPS with Google Maps mobile application. Yesterday, Google went one further and have introduced v2.0 which now includes a function called "My Location" which uses GPS if available but if not uses mobile network cell id technology to provide an approximate geographic location for the user. Having tried the new service this morning in my office, it pinpointed me on the map about 100m away from where I was sitting, not good enough for navigation but more than accurate enough for local advertising. They have also now allowed people to register the location of their business on Google Maps for free, which will help Google build their own directory of local businesses. It only seems a matter of time before Google starts to monetise the application with "paid for" local advertising.

Google Maps Mobile with cell location
